Purpose

An Inspirational Interview:

Exploring Coming of Age through Experienced Eyes

After conducting a personal interview, and reviewing the components of a well-structured newspaper article, each student will create his/her own newspaper story about the interviewee, detailing the individual’s life-changing (coming of age) experiences.

Students will demonstrate the ability to:

1.) Research a primary source by conducting an interview using effective note-taking strategies.

2.) Create a newspaper article by:

  • Correctly applying the 5 Ws and H journaling technique:
  • Who, What, When, Where, Why, & How?

  • Writing an effective lead

  • Applying basic layout for a news article

  • Incorporating at least one graphic with an appropriate caption

  • Using basic editing principles

3.) Connect relevant information after conducting primary research by linking paragraphs and ideas in ways that make a topic or message clear to the reader
